Common Sump Pump Failures
Submersible pumps are highly vulnerable to overheating, especially in demanding applications like sewage or wastewater treatment. Overheating can lead to costly breakdowns and premature pump failures, leaving you with an unexpected repair bill.
Limitations of Thermal Overload Protection
While traditional thermal (overload) protection will shut off the pump when overheating is detected, it has significant limitations. The pump will automatically restart once temperatures return to normal, resulting in a frustrating cycle of repeated shutdowns and restarts. This puts unnecessary strain on the motor and increases the risk of burnout.
What Is Overcurrent Protection?
To provide a more reliable safeguard, we recommend exploring external overcurrent protection devices. Unlike basic overload protection, these devices quickly cut power when they sense excessive current, preventing motor damage. Importantly, they require manual reset, ensuring the root cause is addressed before restarting the pump.
Proven Reliability in Northern Ireland
This simple yet effective solution has proven to reliably protect submersible pumps from the dangers of overheating and burnout. We recently helped a customer in Northern Ireland address this very challenge with their submersible cutter pumps.
The customer had relied on the traditional thermal (overload) protector, but found this approach had significant limitations. The thermal protector would shut off the pump when overheating was detected, but then automatically restart it once temperatures returned to normal. This resulted in a frustrating cycle of repeated shutdowns and restarts, putting unnecessary strain on the motor and increasing the risk of burnout.
If you've experienced recurring issues with overheated submersible pumps, consider exploring external overcurrent protection as a comprehensive safeguard. It could be the key to preventing unexpected and costly breakdowns down the line.
